Special Education

Ashray Akruti’s special school which started with just five children has now scaled up to provideeducation to more than 500 children with hearing loss through four schools located at SrinagarColony, S R Nagar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura in Hyderabad, Telangana State and oneschool located at Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. The school provides free education and rehabilitation services to hearing impaired children from Pre Nursery to Grade 10.Residentialfacilities are provided to those students who are from outside of Hyderabad.

Ashray Akruti’s special school for children with hearing loss was started in 1996 and caters to the educational needs of children with hearing loss. Lack of speech and language skills is a major impediment to the development and growth of these children. Instruction to such children has to be individualized and tailor-made to suit their educational needs. At the same time these children have to be given the skills to cope with the rigors of the ‘mainstream’ world and have to be trained academically to take the qualifying examinations.

The Ashray Akruti school provides free quality education and rehabilitation services for children with hearing impairment. The medium of instruction in the school is English, and the syllabus and curriculum is set in accordance with the Telangana State Board. The syllabus is adapted to suit the requirements of the students. The school maintains a low teacher-student ratio, which ensures that every child to gets individual attention.

The Ashray Akruti school follows the ‘Oral Aural method’ of teaching for children with hearing loss when identified early. However, there are suitable solutions for children who are  identified late and for those  with additional challenges. Ashray Akruti’s Pre-school program assists parents to develop their child’s language speech, hearing and intellectual abilities. Parents are involved in the educational program so they understand the concepts and teaching methodology and practice the same at home.

Education is provided by well-qualified special educators certified by the Rehabilitation Council of India. Content of the lessons are customized and innovative techniques and teaching aids are used for better conceptual understanding. Remedial teaching is provided to those children who perform below the required levels of the class.

At the Ashray Akruti school, students are provided free hearing aids. The school’s qualifiedspeech and language therapists help the children use their residual hearing capabilities and develop speech and language.

The school follows the State Board curriculum from Grades 1 to 10. Students of Grade10 at the end of the academic year appear for the Common Exam which is conducted by the State Board of Secondary Education.

The students of Ashray Akruti are also encouraged to participate in sports and co-curricular activities. The school also has a well-equipped library and computer lab thathelps childrenexplore and advance their knowledge base.
