New born hearing screening

Significant hearing loss is one among the most common and major abnormalities present at birth. It is important that if hearing loss is present it should be detected and remedied before the baby is 6 months old as it impedes speech, language and cognitive development. 

The need to address this issue is of utmost importance since a majority of the Government and Private Hospitals across Telangana do not conduct universal screening nor do they perform high risk screening for new born infants.

The new born hearing screening project provides Otoacoustic emissions, OAE screening to newborn babies from hospitals in Hyderabad. It also provides Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry, BERA screening for all those babies who are detected as ‘REFER’ during initial OAE screening. Newborn babies who are diagnosed with hearing loss are referred to Ashraya-Akruti’s early intervention Centre at S.R Nagar, Hyderabad.
